Below is a Q&A with Jessie Waite, Our Artist of the Month for October 2015.
Tell us briefly about your background and how you got started in your medium?
I began at a young age with a love for Photography and drawing. I had the privilege of working closely with a painter who did faux finishes and this blossomed into an opportunity to create Murals for his customers. This was an abrupt introduction to acrylic paint on large walls.
How does your medium inform your viewpoint or what do you like most about your medium?
I was drawn to acrylics because of its flexibility. Other mediums felt restrictive and I found myself always coming back to acrylics.
Who or what have been your artistic inspirations?
I draw on the complexities of life. I’ve found with two young boys, an hour away painting gives me the opportunity to express different viewpoints of the things I see every day. Claudia Mengel has been a Mentor ushering me into the Abstract painting seen for the last year.
Do you have a favorite piece in your portfolio?
My favorite piece (at the moment) is one titled “A New Beginning”. After finishing a series of work, I began to work on one of my largest pieces and fell in love with the new direction it took me.
What would be your advice to Artists just starting out in your medium?
Paint, paint, paint. You never make a mistake, because it can always be transformed.
